The 2020 Infographic Scholarship Contest

Using research & data from the educational institutions, government, private agencies or non-profits, please create an infographic that addresses one of the topics listed below.

Undertreatment of Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common and devastating complications of diabetes. The disorder occurs when the blood vessels in the retina are damaged due to chronically elevated blood sugar. Diabetic retinopathy can easily go undetected, eventually leading to blurred vision, retinal detachment, glaucoma, or even blindness. The best way to prevent vision loss due to diabetes is through effective control of blood sugar and blood pressure. However after diabetic retinopathy develops, proper diagnosis and treatment with an ophthalmologist becomes critical to saving vision.  Unfortunately, even in America, diabetic retinopathy continues to be under-diagnosed and undertreated, leading to significant, preventable vision loss.

Undertreatment of Macular Degeneration

Wet macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels leak into the center of the retina known as the macula. Because the macula controls central vision, the leaking fluid can lead to blurred vision or blind spots, causing the loss of reading and driving ability. With early detection and intervention, vision loss from wet macular degeneration can be avoided.  Furthermore, regular and timely treatment is critical for preventing recurrence and further vision loss. Unfortunately, wet macular degeneration continues to be detected too late or treated too infrequently to prevent significant vision loss.

Connection Between Poor Vision and Morbidity

Poor vision or vision loss is highly correlated with morbidity. People who lose their vision are more likely to be depressed, suffer injuries, and experience a slew of other health complications. Poor vision can also reduce life expectancy. For these reasons, vision loss is considered a serious public health problem worthy of serious screening, preventative, and treatment measures.  Unfortunately, much of the vision loss in America and its associated morbidity remains entirely preventable.
